Johnny Cash was born into a poor family that had to deal with many tragedies. He spent time in the Air Force and taught himself how to play guitar. When he got stateside, he formed a small band and became a local radio hit. Eventually, he caught Sam Phillip's ear and got a record contract from Sun Records. He soon became a huge star.

Cash has had his share of personal tragedies. Long periods of drug and alcohol abuse have troubled him throughout his career. In 1965, he was arrested for possession of narcotics and in 1966, he spent a night in jail following a disorderly conduct arrest. In recent years, problems with his health have prevented him from touring.

Concert Reviews

[Johnny Cash in concert] I've always wanted to see Johnny in concert. I've been lucky enough to see him three times -- April 1, 1995 at The Alabama Theater in Myrtle Beach, SC, May 15, 1996 at the 930 Club in Washington, DC, and May 31, 1997 at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Thanks to Jim Crowley for the picture of Johnny Cash in concert. It was taken at a show in San Francisco in 1994. When I originally added the picture to this site, Jim had a website with lots of other great concert pictures. Unfortunately, the link is now broken and I don't know how to get in touch with Jim. If you're out there, Jim, drop a note to and I'll put the links back up to your site.

Concert reviews and setlists are linked below. If you've seen Johnny Cash in concert and would like your review included in this list, please send e-mail to and I will either link to your review or add it to my website.

"American Recordings"

His first album on the American Recordings label, American Recordings, is incredible. With it, Cash attempts to reach out to a generation of music lovers who have never heard of him before.

While not as good as American Recordings, Unchained is an excellent album. Cash continues his quest to reach out to a younger generation. This time, he is backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and even covers a Soundgarden song.
